I've been driving these roads as a guide for over seven years now, and the same avoidable mistakes keep coming up. So I put together a comprehensive guide covering the stuff that actually matters.

**The three websites you must bookmark before driving:**

* [**safetravel.is**](http://safetravel.is) — safety alerts, eruption updates, travel advisories
* [**vedur.is**](http://vedur.is) — actual weather data (your phone's weather app is unreliable here)
* [**road.is**](http://road.is) — real-time road conditions, color-coded by severity

The important thing most people miss: wind speed alone doesn't tell you if a road is safe. It's the combination of wind, road surface, and your vehicle that matters. 20 m/s on dry pavement in an SUV is fine. The same wind on icy gravel in a small hatchback is a different story.

**The non-negotiable rules:**

* Headlights ON manually. Not "auto." In a blizzard, the sensor reads white light as daylight and leaves your lights off. You become invisible.
* Park nose into the wind. If you open a door into a gust, it will catch like a sail and rip off the hinges. Rental companies see this constantly.
* Never park on the road to take photos. Pull into a designated stop. Iceland's roads are narrow with limited visibility — a car on the shoulder around a blind curve is a genuine hazard.
* Never drive off-road. The moss takes decades to grow and tire tracks are visible for years. Fines are massive and Icelanders take this very personally.
* Keep half a tank minimum. Stations are far apart in the north and east, and in winter it can be your lifeline if your car breaks down.
* When [vedur.is](http://vedur.is) issues an orange or red warning, cancel the drive. Locals do. Tour operators do. You should too.

**Road types to know about:**

Route 1 (Ring Road) is paved and fine for any car in summer. In winter, many sections can get rough. Secondary roads (2-3 digit numbers) range from paved to gravel. Single-lane bridges are common — first to arrive has right of way. F-roads are highland tracks that require a proper 4x4 and are only open roughly June to September.

I wrote a much more detailed version with diagrams and photos covering all of this plus roundabout rules, fuel planning, and more: [https://www.lilja-tours.com/blog/driving-in-iceland/](https://www.lilja-tours.com/blog/driving-in-iceland/)
