Young naturals what were your mistakes when you first went natural?

Success

I’m a 20-year-old female with 4c fine hair who has basically been natural most of my life. I was hair disowned around 14/15, and between then and 2024 I went through a phase of relaxing, bleaching, and cutting my hair because of some impulsive decisions during a rough mental-health period. In 2024 I decided to start taking my natural hair seriously again.

Looking back, I made a lot of mistakes:

  • I used to dry brush my hair and avoided using water because I hated getting my hair wet.
  • I would only moisturise once a week with coconut oil.
  • I used heat a lot to stretch my hair.
  • I would detangle with a hair pick on dry hair without water or conditioner.
  • • I was very rough when brushing, which caused a lot of breakage because my hair was already dry. •
  • When taking down braids, I would never finger detangle, which sometimes caused tangling and breakage.

I’m still learning how to properly care for my hair and be more gentle with it. What were some mistakes you made early in your natural hair journey?
