For anyone interested in Agentic AI, are we actually missing anything?

Every day there’s a new post about AI agents and it almost creates this feeling that everyone is building autonomous systems and you’re somehow falling behind if you’re not.

But after digging into how most “agents” actually work, I’m not sure that’s really the case.

Most agent systems today seem to follow something like this loop:

Goal → reason about next step → call a tool → observe result → repeat

So the system can break down tasks, choose tools, and iterate based on feedback. But the goal is still externally defined, and the whole thing usually runs inside a controlled loop.

Which makes me wonder if most agents today are basically just:

LLM + tools + memory + control loop

rather than truly autonomous systems.

The funny thing is that many “AI agents” in production today are closer to structured workflows than autonomous systems. The LLM just decides which step runs next.

So I’m curious how others see it.

Are we actually in the middle of a major shift toward autonomous AI systems, or are agents mostly just a more advanced way of orchestrating LLM workflows right now?
