There are two cities in Tokyo. The first is a city of neon and towers, where the wealthy sip whiskey in glass bars high above the streets, and tourists wander Shibuya crossing taking photos to prove how “worldly” they are. The second is the city of those who struggle — cramped apartments, alleys lined with rusting bicycles, pachinko parlors that never close, and people who have learned to live with desperation.

Between the two, there is a single stretch of street where the worlds overlap. It is just safe enough for outsiders to walk without fear, and just wild enough to whisper of danger. Fireworks, counterfeit handbags, pills passed quietly from hand to hand, and the promise of flesh are all part of the open secret.

Sakura leaned back against the cracked wall of a shuttered shop, standing among the other working girls. They wore tight dresses in bright colors, heels clicking against the pavement as they called out to men passing by. Sakura, by contrast, wore old jeans, canvas sneakers, and a faded Rolling Stones t-shirt bought from a stall that swore it was real. Her black hair fell in tired strands to her shoulders, and her pale fingers brushed against her cheek as if to rub the weariness away. She didn’t smile. She never smiled.

The others grew louder, their voices rising in practiced sweetness. A tourist was coming. The sound of foreign laughter drifted down the alley, and Sakura’s stomach twisted with the familiar mix of dread and necessity.
