Finding employment post-transition in the UK
Hey all. Any good guides or pointers on how best to enter the world of work as a trans person / trans woman? How is everyone else finding it?
I've rewritten my CV in my new name, but my experience is quite niche and I've had some long standing former roles, so people in the industry can kinda "figure me out", or, assume I'm lying/hiding something. It's very finance / tech and unfortunately a small area that I work in within London so everyone knows everyone. I'm not comfortable coming out at my current place because it pays okay but it's very very toxic and I know it'd be used against me.
My plan is to just use my new CV and apply to new places, come in as a trans woman and just politely explain as little as I can about my "old" stuff, beyond saying "I had a different name".
Either that, or, I go for a very junior role and start fresh so that I can stop manmoding at work. It's the only aspect of my life in which I'm not out, and although I know I have my reasons, it's starting to grate on me.
How do I navigate aligning my life and work life this way whilst continuing to provide for myself and family? I can't really afford a pay cut, but I also don't see a clean way of sustaining a niche finance / tech role when I know that lots of these folk in investment banking are massively xenophobic, let alone their views on trans people.
Any tips for UK, or potentially relocating as an optional?
