I did it. I managed to catch the cinematic release of the movie only because they decided to extend after the 1st week. I booked my Japan trip before the movie came out so I was really praying for that extension.

While most people wanted to see it in theaters because of the expected upgrade in audio, the visual upgrade is even bigger. Watching it on the big screen is the only way to watch it without the netflix compression. I never imagined I'll get to see the fishes in Tsukuyomi without them looking like a pixelated mess. After watching the netflix version at home over ten times, watching the theatrical version felt like I just got a new set of eyes.

I've watched the movie enough times that I've pretty much memorized every line but this is the first time I watched it without subtitles. Watching it on the big screen without constantly being distracted by subtitles allowed my eyes to dart around every shot and catch hidden details that I still haven't caught before.

The theatrical version had some minor changes, removing the netflix elements. The "Netflix Presents" at the start is gone and the fake ending looked like a normal credit roll without the netflix UI.

Also the Ray MV worked beautifully as an after credits sequence. They should consider adding it to the end of the Netflix version somehow.
