Sister in a potential debt trap - Please read & advise
Need advice on how to clear ₹3.6L debt – overwhelmed and trying to fix my finances
Hi everyone,
I’m posting here because I got a call this morning from my sibling (29F), overwhelmed, confused, shaky voice & literally bawling by the end of it.
Turns out over the past year she made some poor financial decisions to keep up with her wealthy friends and their lifestyle while she was earning peanuts.
Timeline of loans:*
* First loan – *July 2025*
* Second loan – *August 2025*
* Third loan – *October 2025*
* Fourth loan – *December 2025*
* Then a few app loans in February 2026, which made things worse.
At that time she kept taking new loans to manage previous expenses and payments, which snowballed quickly.
*Current loan situation:*
*Major Loans*
* HDFC Jumbo Loan – ₹25,743 remaining (16.2% p.a., due Apr 2026, EMI ~₹853)
* Bajaj Finance – ₹100,382 remaining (31% interest, EMI ~₹4,557)
* KreditBee – ₹39,675 remaining (interest approx ₹9,482 + 11–12%, EMI ~₹6,820)
* HDFC Personal Loan – ₹114,181 remaining (17.98% interest, EMI ~₹4,518)
**Short-term loans**
* ₹29,693
* ₹26,146
*Credit card*
* ₹24,601 outstanding
Total debt:₹366,988 (~₹3.67L)
Her monthly situation*
* Income: ~₹36,000
* Rent: ₹10,000 + other expenses
* Current savings: ~none
*What I’m hoping to get advice on:*
-
What should be the *priority order to pay these loans?*
-
Should we consult a lawyer and tryna go for personal insolvency or any settlement way?
-
Any strategy to realistically *clear ₹3.6L with her income?
I'm younger than her, family earns nothing, I take of how things run financially back at home thru my salary.
Finally when I thought everything was going smoothly, I was saving & planning to purchase my first ever car but this phone call today changed everything.
I know people like her exist who think credit card companies are money giving fairies, bank loans are cyclical and they can just take another to pay off the previous one and keep repeating and shit, I just didn't know this imbecile breed was one in the family.
Any advice or strategy would be really appreciated from here on. 🙏
