Can GLP-1 meds Reduce Alcohol and cigarette cravings?
I’m an alcoholic myself and can easily finish 7-8 bottles of beer in one sitting. I’ve been on the fence about starting GLP-1 meds for weight loss for a long time.
But recently I went down a research rabbit hole and found something interesting: GLP-1 medications may also help reduce alcohol and even cigarette cravings.
So here’s what I learned
• GLP-1 receptors aren’t just in the gut, they're also in the brain’s reward centers (like the nucleus accumbens).
• These meds seem to blunt dopamine spikes linked to addictive behaviors.
• Some studies show reduced alcohol intake and fewer binge episodes in people on GLP-1 meds.
• There’s emerging evidence they may reduce nicotine cravings too.
• Researchers are actively studying GLP-1 agonists as potential treatments for alcohol usedisorder.
It’s not officially approved for addiction treatment (yet), but the overlap between appetite regulation and reward pathways is fascinating.
If anyone here has noticed reduced alcohol or smoking urges on GLP-1s, I’d genuinely love to hear.
