Why do we use imparfait and passé compose?

Like, historically, why did the French decide to use two past tenses? Why do you need to distinguish if it only happened in the past or was habitual or whatever. Don't the words in the sentence already tell you that? I'm Genuinely curious why, not trying to be rude.
