Column selection is global to the app?

Is column selection for a given table (example, position list) is global? I have been trying to get different columns set for multiple open windows of the same list without success. In addition to multiple open tables in the same layout, I have tried different layouts in the same workspace and also separate workspaces. It doesn't seem to matter, if I change my column selection it affects all open copies of that particular table.

Am I doing something wrong, or is this truly a global setting?
