The 5 hardest marketing lessons I've learned

I’ve been in marketing for over 17 years, and these are the five biggest strategic lessons I’ve learned the hard way:

  1. Attribution is a scam. First-touch, last-touch, multi-touch, MMM, it’s all a distraction. Just because digital lets you track everything doesn’t mean you should waste time debating which channel “deserves” credit. Marketing is about influence, and every channel plays a role. The second you get sucked into attribution battles, you’ve already lost. Campaign-level attribution is the only approach that matters.

  2. Stop wasting time on unused content. In B2B, teams churn out endless content (blog posts, whitepapers, e-books, studies) only to push it once on social and move on. It’s a treadmill of waste. Flip the script: Define the goal first, then build only the content needed to hit it. No more “create now, figure out distribution later.”

  3. Integrated campaigns are worth 100x random activities. Most teams operate in silos: an event here, a LinkedIn post there, some Google Ads, a magazine ad, all launched without a unified plan. Real revenue comes from integrated campaigns, where every channel intentionally supports the next, guiding prospects down the funnel.

  4. Campaigns must be audience-centric. Too many teams run product-centric or theme-based campaigns targeting multiple audiences at once. Big mistake. Different audiences have different needs and resonate with different messages. Mixing them guarantees at least some (if not all) will ignore you. Audience-first is non-negotiable.

  5. Governance is the secret to scaling. When you’re a one-person team, decisions are easy. But as you grow, silos form, attribution wars flare up, content piles up unused, and campaigns serve team agendas, not audiences. Clear governance (who decides what, how teams collaborate) is the most underrated piece of the puzzle.

These lessons took me years to distill, and I’ve tested them repeatedly. A lot of it feels obvious in hindsight, but most teams overlook it. (Shoutout to the RIO Integrated Marketing Campaign Framework, it finally gave me the structure to articulate this clearly.)

What’s your #6? What’s the one lesson you’d add to this list?
