Strange guidelines around scented products - is this weird to anyone else?

 Questions

I am in a community band in my city, and there is at least one person in the band who is extremely sensitive to scents. I know this because they are very vocal about it, and the band director reminds people often, at their request, to not wear scented products to band rehearsal.

To me this is fairly common - I've seen lots of workplaces and public areas request no scents be worn, and I always take this to specifically mean perfume and cologne. I think that's totally reasonable because some people really do load on the perfume and cologne, and it can be a lot for anyone, regardless of sensitivities.

What I DO find strange is that whenever the director or this band member reminds the band not to wear scented products, they specify that includes scented shampoos, conditioner, and deodorant. All those should be unscented, apparently. Am I the only one who thinks this is a strange ask, and not super reasonable? I sympathize with people who have scent sensitivities, as I can imagine that must be really annoying to live with, given all the scents people wear. However, I've never once smelled someone's shampoo/conditioner/deodorant if I'm more than like a foot away from them, especially if they haven't JUST hopped out of the shower. A dry person with no perfume/cologne on doesn't smell like much unless you're right up close. Yes, being in band rehearsal has people sitting relatively close, but they're only close to one person on each side typically, and could easily space themselves out a little more (we set up our own chairs and layout each rehearsal), rather than asking people to buy only unscented shower products. Not to mention, I've never come across unscented shampoo or deodorant. I'm sure they do exist, but I've never seen them nor do I know anyone who uses them.

For some context, this is a gigantic hall we rehearse in, and there are about 60 band members. Also, I've never seen them approach anyone directly or kick someone out for wearing scents, so I'm not saying they're extremely neurotic in that way. I'm not asking for any advice as it's really not a problem in my life or anything, and additionally I play the biggest instrument in the band and sit all the way at the back quite far from everyone else (the sensitive member sits at the very front, and the closest I sit to anyone is roughly 5 feet), but regardless I am conscious never to wear perfume there, or anything else strongly scented. I'm just curious if anyone else feels that the unscented shampoo/conditioner/deodorant request is strange? Is there anyone with scent sensitivities who might have some interesting perspective?
