Why does Creed Wild Vetiver smell offensive to me, and only me?
Look, I’m not completely clueless, I know fragrance is subjective. I know everyone’s nose is different. I also know I don’t belong at a Creed boutique in full Walmart chic (Hanes T-shirt, Walmart pants, maybe even flip-flops). Somehow, despite being hopelessly out of place, the salespeople were awesome and handed me a take home sample vial of Wild Vetiver and a card stock to smell. They were so excited about the upcoming release of this new product.
I took one sniff and immediately jerked back like I had just been maced. My nose instantly felt violated. The top notes hit me all at once, burnt rubber, musty basement, wet dirt, rotten earth.
Meanwhile, the people around me were sniffing it like it was intoxicating. Nods, smiles, oohs and ahhs. The gentleman next to me used the words crisp, airy and fresh sophistication. And there I was, desperately trying to play it cool, pretending I was pleasantly surprised too. Oh wow how nice I said, while nodding and smiling trying to blend in like a child trying out an espresso for the first time. I kept my composure until I got home and asked my wife and oldest kid to smell it. To my complete shock, they absolutely loved it and were blown away.
I am left here hopelessly confused, wondering why I can't smell what they are smelling. I know some people taste cilantro as soap, so maybe something similar is happening here.
This isn’t the first time something like this has happened. I absolutely love Aventus, but the first time I smelled Nishane Hacivat, I had a similar reaction. Roja Dove Elysium and Mancera Cedrat Boise never clicked for me either, though they aren’t as offensive. I know these are all extremely well regarded fragrances, so I’m guessing most people smell something amazing. I just want to know what on earth is causing me to recoil like this?
Has this happened to you with any other fragrances? Does this mean that a true office safe scent does not exist?
