Does it make sense for me to join AirForce at my age (30F) with family as breadwinner?

General Advice

I have always wanted to join the military. I have 3 kids (10,6 and 3). I just turned 30 and have a Bachelor’s and MBA. I thought about going the Officer route, but I really don’t know if I’d be qualified aside from having the degree complete and I know it’s competitive. I wouldn’t mind going enlisted, but my issue is the financial perspective. I make $110k gross right now (about 76k take home after taxes, insurance and 401k). It is roughly $2700 every two weeks that I bring home. (My spouse brings home about $1500 every two weeks). So I am the breadwinner. If I went in via the enlisted route, I read that based on my credits I could enlist as an E-3? I think after taxes, that would be less than $3k a month…

I guess my question is, does it even make sense financially for me to do this? I’d love to but I feel like since I’m the breadwinner, I have to be more cautious of my decision. If I went as an officer, I think I’d be closer to what but would still probably not be more than $4k a month.

I understand none of that pay includes housing allowances and other pay.

What would you do? Am I stuck and too late to join?
