AIO for being sad my boyfriend doesn't call me beautiful often?

❤️‍🩹 relationship

Me and my boyfriend have been dating for almost a year. We're long distance. In the beginning he'd compliment me everyday, even when I was in pyjamas looking like a potato he'd look mesmerised and starry eyed.

The first times we visited in person he'd call me beautiful, sexy, goddess especially when I'd dress up. Even in front of my mom he said "wow she's so beautiful " and I couldn't believe how lucky I was. Fast forward a few months, I visited him and stayed with him 3 months. The compliments really really got less. I'd express my insecurity of him suddenly not complimenting me anymore and he said he'd try but he didn't really. Just to clarify, I compliment him alot as well and have said many times how hot he is and how he's the most beautiful person I've seen, which most of the times he didn't respond anything to these things. But my compliments did get less since our last arguments (see below).

One night I was really sad and I told him again that this is making me so insecure and sad and I express it but nothing changed and I got a bit overly emotional. I told him "if my person told me they needed more affirmation I would make my best to make them feel like the most beautiful person ever" he said he thinks I'm the most beautiful person to him but he just doesn't think to say it and that he "forgets". I know this sounds sweet but for some reason it doesn't make me feel better. It's been now 3 months since we had this fight and I haven't said anything in so long cause I just wanted to observe without causing unnecessary arguments.

Today I sent him a nude after showering then I dressed casually but I looked very good and I sent him a mirror selfie. On the nude he said "wow -outrageouspapayaaa-😍" but on the mirror selfie he just put a heart reaction. When we videocalled he said hello my love etc and again spoke about the nude and how hot it was. He saw it was kind of serious and said "what is it?" I told him that he rarely calls me beautiful or pretty anymore and he said that I'm overreacting and that he compliments me often. As soon as beauty compliments go, he will now say them only once or twice a week and he doesn't seem at all as mesmerised as he was in the beginning. Maybe to someone this sounds as insecurity but I'm generally not insecure in myself, I think I'm beautiful and kind and I like myself. I just don't understand the shift in energy and the lack of effort when I've communicated what I need...

When I mentioned it today he also said that he called me beautiful more often in the beginning because I'd say often that i look like a potato, but that's not true, he actually said it so often on his own without me making such comments about myself. So it feels now that he's trying to make it seem like he didn't say it often, like he's trying to gaslight me into thinking nothing really changed. (Im not saying he's actually deliberately gaslighting me btw but maybe subconsciously?)

Anyway, him saying I'm overreacting and not being considerate to my request made me cry and feel not heard. I know it probably sounded as an attack but i explained it and I tried to show i love it when he calls me "my love" or says he misses me, but he seemed unaffected about me crying and said he's sorry but it didn't feel very genuine. He said before that when he says sorry it's usually not sincere since he thinks I'm overreacting but says it anyway so i won't be sad so now i don't even know if he means it.

His exact message was "I'm sorry my -outrageouspapaya- I love you. If you don't feel cherished enough I'll do better" And that's it. I don't know what to respond to that. I feel like its even worse now and less meaningful if he compliments me since it had to become such a big argument, than if he'd said "oh i will compliment you more, sorry i didn't do it more even though I said I would" etc etc instead of arguing about this for 30 minutes. I'm a words of affirmation person and I need to feel like the most beautiful person to my SO.

Am I overreacting?
