In an oversaturated market full of competitive games dying like flies, people WANT co-op.
Performance standards dropped massively. Once upon a time people used to boast about hitting 100+ fps at ultra settings 1440p on their latest highend cards. Now they boast about being able to run games smoothly with upscale + framegen on their highend cards.
