Genova 1948 Success
Summary: Pre-DL, pre-Cable Act 1948 case.
Line: GGM - GF - M - Me
Document gathering: Self-service and 007. I gathered everything myself except for the Italian records, which I couldn't locate myself. 007 found them promptly, archived in a neighboring comune.
Complications: Heaps of spelling errors in the documents. I chose to take a bit of a risk by not correcting any of the errors. In retrospect, I would have missed the DL cutoff if I had made corrections. Additionally, GGF's USCIS file was dozens of pages long because he retained and used his Italian passport after naturalizing in the US, which was illegal at the time. His naturalization was nearly cancelled. I suppose this may not be materially relevant to the case, but it greatly increased translation time.
Translator: Alessandra Cuoghi. I had ~150 pages due to GGF's USCIS file. Alessandra was fantastic. Great communication, fast service, and fair price.
Avvocato: Luigi Paiano. Avv. Paiano reviewed my documents quickly (~1 week). My case was filed promptly upon receipt of payment. Avv. Paiano immediately sent updates for major milestones (e.g., hearing date set, hearing occurred, decision deposited, etc.)
Genova court experience: Genova had a reputation for being slow, and so I assumed the worst would happen. I waited approximately 7 months for assignment to a judge, and was reassigned to a different judge nearly 5 months later. At this point, I assumed I would wait eternally. Luck was on my side, though, as Genova pressed a flurry of new judges into service against the cittadinanza backlog. Approximately 3 months elapsed between reassignment and positive decision. The case was only in decision for a few days before status changed to procedimento definitivo. Luigi emailed me early the next bearing good news.
Helpful resources: A huge shout-out to u/CakeByThe0cean for pulling data from Giustizia Civile every week. I was glued to these .csv files. It's a wealth of information and really helped shed light on the process in Genova.
Thank you to everyone on this subreddit, the moderators, 007, Alessandra Cuoghi, and Avv. Paiano. Also thank you to the many record office staff I interacted with and sometimes bugged during my search.
