Older hiring managers judging job changes, is this a generational thing?
I recently had an interview where the hiring managers questioned why I change jobs every ~2 years. They both mentioned they’ve been at their company for 20+ years.
The thing is, they looked like they were in their 50s, and I’m early 30s. The job market today is very different from what it was 20–30 years ago.
Most of my moves happened because of limited growth opportunities, not because I wanted to job hop. For example, in one role I was already a senior manager and the only next step was director, but the director wasn’t leaving anytime soon.
What I’m actually looking for is a company where I can stay long term and grow internally, but in many organizations that’s just not possible unless someone above you leaves.
So I’m curious: are hiring managers being unrealistic when they expect long tenure in today’s job market?
