I stopped applying and started searching for hiring managers directly. Here's the method
I work in data consulting and used to waste weeks applying to postings that went nowhere. Then I realized most roles I was going for were already filled by the time I saw them someone's network had already delivered a candidate.
So I flipped my approach. Instead of applying, I started finding the people who actually make hiring decisions.
LinkedIn has a search feature most people overlook boolean operators. You can combine keywords to find very specific people. For example:
"Engineering Manager" AND (data OR analytics) AND (remote)
In about 10 minutes you can build a list of 20-30 people who are likely to have open needs on their teams.
The key is what you do next. Don't send a pitch. Don't send your resume. Instead, look at what they're working on. Engage with their content. Ask a genuine question about their team or project. Build a real conversation.
When a need comes up, you're already someone they recognize not applicant.
This completely changed how I find work. Haven't cold-applied in over a year.
Has anyone else tried direct outreach like this? What worked for you?
