Passport validity confusion

Hi I'm seeing to opinions as to expiration of passport upon entering Jamaica

1. Needs to be 6 months after entry
2. Needs to just cover the intended stay

My passport is from the EU and I would be flying from Cancun via Miami. Which of the above is actually right, and if 2), would the airlines know and respect it or is there a risk they will enforce the 6 months anyway? Many thanks!
