Coffee maker, why so bad?

I am staying in an Airbnb. I decided to bring my own good beans but use the Mr Coffee-style machine that was there. I ground the beans yesterday. It tastes awful. Not "less good than out of my switch" but actually bad bad. Help me understand why this is the case? I knew it wouldn't be as good but I didn't expect it to be actually bad.
