Why did the earliest LEAF have the OBC in the back? Is the iconic charging flap on the LEAF thanks to CHAdeMO? (Speculation)
I was looking at a picture under the hood of a 2011 LEAF and wondered why the OBC wasn't under the hood in the first place. That got me speculating on a few things...
AS I IMAGINE IT:
It then occurred to me that maybe, just maybe, they originally intended to put only a J1772 plug on the side of the car, similar to most cars with gas doors on the side and usually at the back. And placing the OBC in the back would make sense to have it closer to the plug and the battery to minimize cabling.
Then, somewhere along the line, they added CHAdeMO to the spec, and needed a way to fit both connectors. Making a "gas door" on the side of the car to fit both would have been a nightmare. They had to move the charging port and ended up with the mini hood in the front.
If CCS1/CCS2 had existed well before the LEAF was introduced, I bet we would not have had its iconic front charging port.
Had the NACS/CCS battle been settled sooner, I bet the Gen3 LEAF would have been introduced with only one charge port door. I have a feeling in a couple years, they'll get rid of the second charge port door.
