Should I move to my boyfriend's town but live alone?

NSFWRandom

Posted this to a different sub and got a bunch of hate so I deleted it, hoping to get some advice here now.

I (29F) have been with my BF (35M) for 1.5 years, amazing relationship, no serious conflict, good communication, genuinely a great guy.

Recently I found out that I have to move in the next 30 days since they're selling our apartment building and we all have to vacate. Renting laws here are really loose, both parties are able to cancel the lease without penalties if they announce it at least 30 days in advance.

My boyfriend lives one town away and he rents too, we're in Europe so his town is pretty close to the big city I live in, with only a 30 min commute between them. The rent there is cheaper, life feels more relaxed and it's nicer than the big city I live in.

Before I got the news at some point we loosely talked about us both being comfortable with living together at some point, no timelines just theoretically. Last year he moved to his current place, which is a solid size studio apt but realistically it's more for one person than a couple. Like anyone else he hates moving and just made the place feel like his own, so he hopes not to do that again unless he absolutely has to.

Now the kicker, when I got the news we talked about it and he kept asking if I would consider moving to his town, and before thinking I told him not unless we were to live there together. A few days later he asked again if I would considering looking for a place there, saying it might be more practical since I like the area and the rent is cheaper, the only downside being the commute is longer than from my current area in the city which is almost walking distance to my work, but also the rent is way more expensive. I told him that I would think it's super weird that I move to his town and live on my own and that it would almost seem like something was off between us, and he disagreed saying again that it could be a practical solution for me, he even offered that I can temporarily stay with him if I don't find a new place in time. Then we agreed to talk about it all more seriously soon.

I honestly hoped that maybe this would be a chance for us to look for something together, since I'm definitely willing to move to his town, but I also understand that it might be too early in the relationship for him or just that he doesn't want to move again so soon after he found a place that he really likes, hence why he keeps suggesting I find my own place there, and I respect that. Not sure that I would move to his town if I didn't get to know it so well because of him, the commute, area and everything, but I definitely don't mind the idea of saving some money on rent in this economy.

I know we're about to have this long serious conversation, that might include the question where our relationship is going in the long run and I'm freaking out because I know I might not be willing to continue if he permanently sees us just dating and coexisting in the same area and not taking any future steps like living together, which really bums me out because of how great our relationship is.

My bad traits are that I'm stubborn and don't always communicate everything that's on my mind to keep the peace, while he knows to be a little too independent and at times doesn't like planning too far into the future, just enjoys living in the present.

My questions are, is it outrageous to move to his town into an apartment of my own, the pros being cheaper rent, nicer area, my boyfriend being closer and the cons being the longer commute, just to feel it out and still be independent if for any reason things don't work out? I'm scared that it might feel like I'm chasing after him and even though it's not the only pro the fact that he'd be closer to me is definitely what drives me to it most, so I might be disappointed if our lives don't change much apart from the 30 min commute. Also, I personally don't know anyone that did this, couples that I know who live between the two cities usually relocate to one of them together, not separately.

The people closest to me are divided, some think it's crazy he suggested I find a place of my own instead of jumping to the chance to look for something together and that I should not move closer to him unless to live with him, while others think it might not be that bad of an idea to feel it out for myself and see how it affects our relationship, saying I can always move back to the big city if I change my mind or something goes wrong.

What do you think?
