Spaces in Realm name nearly drove me batty - Till I realized... ugh

:flairDiscussion: Discussion

TL;DR (I was dumb, WoW was dumb)

Several official Realm names have spaces in them:

  • Silver Hand
  • Howling Fjord
  • Blackrock Mountain

Etc... I'd guess that all-told, maybe 33% do.

It seems that when you're trying to do cross realm things like guild invite or group invite etc.. the space in realm name should be removed...

Until I realized this I was losing my everlinving mind

Longer ranty-thing

I came back to WoW after a 5 or so year absence. My wife was all excited about the new expansion (she's been playing the entire time) and I decided I'd re-up and level up with her etc.

She and I both have several characters on Silver Hand as well as a few other realms. Since she has a guild for her alts, and guild perks are a thing, we were trying to join/invite and running into issues.

We thought it was maybe due to cross realm or cross faction and it felt random, then we finally realized it was the bloody space

Inviting Somebody-Silver Hand was failing but inviting Somebody-Farstriders was fine and I triple checked on the load screen to be sure I had the names right and yeah.. stupid me but also

WHY? Wow? just why?

As a software developer, I totally get that dealing with spaces is a pita - needing to escape\ spaces\ or 'enclose in quotes' or retokenize_to_underscores

The point?

I searched around trying to figure out if there was a bug - guess I'm just posting this hear bearing my own dumb in case others run into this issue. Hopefully they'll find this and say "oh yeah that tracks"

Also I'm legit embarassed it took me that long to figure out
