Supermarket use by dates

How do you all interpret use by dates?

I always apply the ‘sniff test’ but having done that on some Morrisons chicken wings I wish I hadn’t.

The wings had a use by date of 5th March. Do you take that as -

“Eat it by the 4th” or “Don’t eat it on the 6th”?
