AIO for feeling excluded from my close childhood friend’s wedding? (26F)
One of childhood friends, Jamie (26F), got married last weekend and I’ve been feeling extremely conflicted about how things went. For context, Jamie and I grew up together, attended the same schools from preschool through high school, the same extracurriculars, and joined the same sorority in college, and even found out that we’re cousins! To this day, we still talk on FaceTime every week even though we live in different states.
When she got engaged a few months ago, things felt a bit weird. I noticed that she wouldn’t really mention wedding details or planning with me on our calls, until one day Jamie slipped up and accidentally mentioned something about her bridesmaids. It was a bit awkward because I don’t think she intended to let me know that I wasn’t included in the bridal party at first. Admittedly, I was a little hurt and confused but I brushed it off. The following week, she came back and told me she wanted me to be her “something blue”. For the “something blue”, my role was walk down the aisle holding a picture of her deceased mother and then just sit down in the audience. The bridesmaids were already wearing blue, so it felt like a bit of a half-baked idea as a cop out/consolation prize. I tried to respectfully decline but she insisted she wanted me in the wedding to still be in her special day. I still tried to be positive about it, I went to the bachelorette, gave nice gifts (including an expensive portrait of her and her mother), and cheered her on and helped her plan things.
Fast forward to the actual wedding. The entire weekend, I was treated like an afterthought. I was barely invited to the rehearsal dinner, wasn’t included in the festivities after the rehearsal dinner, and wasn’t included in the bridal festivities the morning of. After the wedding, Jamie told me to wait around to take pictures with the bridal party. I waited for over an hour awkwardly by myself in the freezing cold while everyone else (bridal party and family) took photos. I was in a clear and visible place beside the photographer, so it’s not like they just didn’t see me. Even some of the other bridesmaids were confused as to why I wasn’t included in the photos. After the wedding, I just told my boyfriend I was ready to drive back to the state we live in and we left early the next day.
I haven’t really spoken to Jamie since then. I was crushed because I was so happy for her and excited to see her, despite the awkwardness around not being in the official bridal party. She’s been trying to call and text me and apologized for “forgetting” to include me in the pictures and acknowledged that I was literally right there the entire time. Today, she sent me an AI generated photo of us together to make up for the fact that we got 0 pictures together (lmao it looks nothing like me of course). I’m conflicted. I don’t want to make someone else’s wedding about myself, because I know it’s not about me AT ALL. However, I still feel weird about everything and the AI picture is like the cherry on top. Am I overreacting and should just let it go?
