I have a question for the guys, How do you guys know if you like someone? Im genuinely curious?

For example do you know from the first involvement or gradually ? And if you do like someone, do you hide it initially or actively show it? Im just so confused from the actions of a guy im talking to. I read somewhere that if he confuses you, then he is wasting your time. Is this true?
