What Besides the Obvious Might Come From This BrewDog Expansion?
Tilray's BrewDog Acquisition:
Thinking out of the BOX:
- Tilray has Global Growth + from its MedMen Notes another Angle for Future Wellness Synergies? (Franchising Both, Events, & More)
Tilray Brands just closed the £33M (~$44M USD) acquisition of key BrewDog assets on March 2, 2026:
- Receives BrewDog's global brand/IP,
- UK brewing ops (including massive underused 1ML Ellon facility), and 11 prime brewpubs (60,000ft2 Canary Wharf across from Parliment, Edinburgh DogHouse, Dublin, etc.).
- US - Ohio's 42-acre Canal Winchester campus with 170 BBL virtually new (built 2022) production with hotel/brewhouse and numerous pubs/taprooms along the Eastern US & Las Vegas.
- Australia assets in 4 cities are in separate negotiations, expected close ~30 days.
- BrewDog's past leadership's (CEO & COO) "A New Chapter for BrewDog" March 4th statement is optimistic: 733 jobs will be preserved (484 maybe lost) in this UK Tilray deal, focus on stability/growth/innovation, and exploring franchising select bars (with rehiring incentives for laid-off staff.
- England (28):Basingstoke, Bath, Bournemouth, Bristol – Baldwin Street, Harbourside, Cambridge, Carlisle, Cheltenham, Exeter. London – Soho, Camden Road, Chancery Lane, Clerkenwell, Ealing, Hammersmith, Seething Lane, Tower Bridge, Wandsworth Liverpool, Manchester –DogHouse Manchester, Manchester Outpost, Milton Keynes, Newcastle, Norwich, Nottingham, Plymouth, Reading, Southampton. Scotland (9): Aberdeen – Castlegate, Union Square Edinburgh – Cowgate Glasgow – Merchant City, Argyle Street, Inverurie Perth - St Andrews, Stirling Wales (1): Cardiff).
- It sounds as if these bars are all available to Tilray 1st. Pennies on the $. Clean, repair/remodel if needed, Franchise. Are they worth it? Adding many more customers.
- The original deal adds ~$200M annual revenue + $6-8M adjusted EBITDA by FY2027, pushing Tilray's beverage platform to ~$500M (total biz ~$1.2B diversified,
- NOTE: without on going legal changes).
Then how can this be tuned up?
- Untapped capacity in all 3 countries for ramping Tilray Brands like (Shock Top, SweetWater 420, Montauk, Breckenridge) globally, plus able to create events at spots like BrewDog's 18K-seat capacity UK football/rugby stadium. 25k-seat capacity for outdoor concerts/& large private events.
- MedMen Notes & U.S. Synergy Angle/Option
Tilray holds ~68% economic interest in MedMen's senior secured convertible notes (principal ~$165.8M total acquired via SPV in 2021;
Tilray issued 'shares only' worth ~$118M then).
It's a debt/equity play—conversion and warrants depend on U.S. federal cannabis changes (or Tilray waiver) + approvals.
Post-MedMen's 2024 bankruptcy/asset liquidation, the notes (now valued ~$32M in Tilray filings, no recent interest/revenue recognized) but could yield cheap for Tilray IP/branding rights or residuals—strategic for U.S. entry post-Sch3 rescheduling.
MedMen focused on premium, compact dispensaries (typical 2,000–5,000 sq ft urban retail storefronts, think high-end Apple-like experience, not large hospitality venues).
None match BrewDog-scale brewpubs (5,000–10,000+ sq ft with bars/kitchens/events, or Ohio's massive production campus).
- Long-game: Other Layers of Upside
- Franchising:
BrewDog teases manager-led franchises—adapt for more pubs globally or wellness extensions (MedMen-style retail in legal markets).
- Leverage Tilray distribution for cross-supply (beers + CBD/wellness).
- Legacy Aphria investments, Could Tilray help these?:
High Tide (2018/2019 stake—big Canadian retailer, now EU via Germany Remexian acquisition)
+ Schroll Medical (Danish organic medical cannabis, global supply)
Adds possible retail/supply chain muscle.
- Synergies with BrewDog pubs for Canada festival plays (Alberta allowing on-site cannabis sales at adult events already or Kentucky bill for infused drinks at bars/fests)
- EU medical (Germany CanG reforms).
- Events & hospitality:
- Stadium concerts,
- dog-friendly packed spots (New Albany OH),
- Vegas rooftop—perfect for SweetWater 420 global push or functional bev tests.
- Canada festivals expanding;
- emerging U.S. state allowances (e.g. Kentucky bill for infused drinks at bars/fests).
Risks:
Integration, craft headwinds, regs—but opportunistic deals
(BrewDog at fraction of peak $2B value, and MedMen also cheap) both position Tilray as a beverage/wellness leader.
"Story far from finished," per BrewDog CEO & COO, Mar 4.
Thoughts?
Franchising:
Add BrewDog bars once in numerous states like Kentucky, that has bills for infused drinks at bars/festivals/concerts.
MedMen-inspired retail concepts or part of German Pharmacies?
2. Medmen - High Tide retail mashups in EU/Canada? Will German Pillar 2 allow a High Tide retail or franchises?
3. SweetWater 420 at UK stadium and other events Globally?
- Bullish on the Franchises! Whether Franchising available unused properties could certainly expand requirements, increase revenues to allow ads, promotions, etc.
Start small with CBD/Wellness at events/festivals, scale to infused where regulations allow (Canada's festival momentum, emerging EU clubs).
It's certainly becoming very large, prior to most medical cannabis legalization
