Would a C215 CL 500 be a decent purchase, considering I barely need a car?

My budget is around 12k to 15k for purchasing. I live in Portugal for the record. (so used car prices and car parts are... wonky, here). Mercedes parts are also, or so I've been led to believe, cheaper than a lot of other options due to how damn many Mercs there are here (see Top Gear's Albania episode to take a peek at the average Portuguese street).

Do kindly excuse the following rambling.

Due to the nature of my employment, I barely need a car, and I'm mainly being pushed into getting one by my parents. It's a long story that I'll get into if so requested, but moving on...

The hypothetical vehicle would be used for the occasional trip to the shop or maybe a longer trip mainly on the highway. It will see at best 500 kilometers of travel.

A year. And that's being incredibly optimistic. It will also sit for long periods of time. At least I sure hope my parents don't take it for a joyride, I sure hope they don't! /s

So yeah me getting a car still doesn't strike me as the smartest move, but I would like to have one to be fair.

As such, there are certain requirements imposed by my parents, with their method of enforcement consisting of them annoying me and never letting me hear the end of it. I'd rather avoid all that.

The requirements are as such:

  • Must be 2-door. 4-doors are for "families". (okay???? there goes my beloved W140...);
  • Must be a Mercedes (Absolute minimum is being German, and exceptions are made for post-2010 BMWs, a requirement hopelessly outside of my budget, and I also just don't understand the logic of.... but okay????);
  • Must be from after the 2000s. (Insane requirement, I hate it so much, it's so stupid, they're such idiots I swear-)
  • Diesel preferred. (Never. I refuse. If I cant have a diesel S-class or CLS, I will not have a diesel. I will die on this hill. IDC if gas costs 2 euros a liter. Unless it's a E 420 CDI. Those are cool. And very rare here, and not cheap...)

My waning sanity aside, I quite like the look of the C215 CL 500s, and they fit in the purchasing budget. As for maintenance, as I understand, it has the less reliable hydraulic suspension, but are otherwise considered mechanically reliable. And my income should cover it from what I've seen, even if some of the more nightmarish cases seem a little painful.

My mother has also praised its interior. And that alone is enough approval I'd ever need, frankly...

The electronics however are from what I've seen the issue. I'll be frank... If it starts, and runs, then it has "no issues"... Additionally, while flawed, my family is filled with quite a few mechanically gifted individuals, of which my dad and uncle are included. So a lot of stuff can be done by us. (They're farmers, and quite used to fixing their own Mercedes and tractors).

Now if the computer that controls the suspension is the issue, then it's another story. Or if the windows won't go down... this is a hot country and that would quickly become a problem...

For the last few years, I've regularly used my parents C220 W204, and I am quite fond of it. Yes, the ESP doesn't work and it physically cant go over 2k rpm in 6th gear because of that, but it still runs and functions... (And yes, I've begged my parents to take it to the shop, but my father loves procrastinating a trip to the shop whenever possible. I wonder why.)

As for the high performance aspect, after all this would be the first car I actually own.

Frankly I've been called the opposite of a lead-foot. My mom stopped asking me to drive her because I'm too "slow" apparently... I just like to appreciate the ride, but fine... So yeah, I'm not gonna crash at 250 km/h with more alcohol than blood in my veins... though I'd like to know if it will still spin out by accident in an intersection or if it doesn't have that sort of pull.

The coupe version is however outside my budget, and considering my uncle's horrendous experience with his coupe, I'd rather avoid them.
My parents for their part have been pushing me to buy a diesel CLK from the same era... a car which, due to my personal tastes I find... "uninteresting?", banal? (please don't shoot me, I just like big cars more...). And the ones with the AMG look alike body kit are rare here, and that's the ones I would actually accept...

As for the CLK 500 and AMGs, they are either flat-out unavailable here, or outside the budget. I could get one from abroad, but that's a whole other can of worms...

So TL:DR, am I an idiot for preferring a CL 500 over an CLK when they cost the same (purchasing cost)?

Feel free to yell at me, call me a buffoon and tell me to buy a W124 coupe, I'd love to, but I feel like they would practically disown me if I did that... (they also cost the same, somehow...)
