Real talk: what % of first time home owners are getting family help?

Context: my husband and I worked very hard for three years straight to buy our first home and it nearly broke us. We paid every dime by ourselves. We had our first kid in that time, felt trapped in a shitty small apartment, and had tremendous emotional / mental stress trying to get ourselves into a place that would feel our own and lay roots.

And during that time, we saw countless couples slide into their comfortable "starter home" while we were sweating bullets and budgeting down to the penny wondering if we could make those numbers work. It really illuminated to me that our situation was unique, and it felt like at least 75% of first time homebuyers were getting significant family support.

We know life isn't fair, so it's not reasonable to expect it to be, that man did it hurt. I also recognize a lot of people made a lot of money during Covid with RSUs and such, and there is a real cohort buying on their own for that reason.

What do you think? Is family help the secret lever for getting new buyers in homes, which no one is really acknowledging out loud? If you had family help buying your home, did you have a sense of privilege you didn't want to disclose or did you feel like the home wasn't really yours? It feels like one of the more complicated and unbalanced issues of our time, at least for a certain demographic.
