A lot of free time- Thinking of doing some academia.

I'm a freshman in Uni with a lot of free time planning on working in finance, I don't have much to do this year so I've been looking into productive things I can do. I'm about to do a masters in finance after my bachelors and I was wondering if writing a peer reviewed academic piece of writing will help for target bschool admissions and then further in my career in finance.
