Produced by this famous actress and philanthropist, this poignant adaptation of Alice Walker’s novel and the 1985 film, featuring a book by Marsha Norman, follows this character's journey from abuse to empowerment. The premier was December 1, 2005, at the Broadway Theatre. The original lead was LaChanze. The score features a mix of jazz, gospel, ragtime, and blues. The role has been played by numerous actresses, including Fantasia Barrino (2007–2008), Zonya Love (2008), and Cynthia Erivo, who starred in the 2015 revival.
