I joined a social anxiety group… and ended up way out of my comfort zone

i started going to these group meetings because i had a serious problem with overthinking and being afraid of people. we would sit in a circle and talk about what was bothering us and try to get better at socializing. my biggest issue was always thinking too much about what people think of me. most of my life i either avoided people or tried to act exactly how i thought they expected me to act. after about four months i actually started feeling better. i talked more, laughed more, and even made a couple friends there. two of them were guys maybe 7–8 years older than me. they were cool and easy to talk to and we joked a lot during the sessions. one day they invited me to a party. the only weird part was that it was in another city near some lake, and the house they mentioned sounded kind of isolated. i told them i’m not really the type of girl who goes to parties like that and that it was far away, but they kept saying it wasn’t a crazy club party, more like a private gathering and that they’d arrange the ride. they also kept joking that they already met girls like me before and that all i needed was to relax a little and i’d have fun. something about it felt a bit suspicious but at the same time i kept thinking about what we talked about in the group — stepping out of your comfort zone and not letting fear control you. so i decided for once to just go. i told my parents i was going out with some friends and that they didn’t need to worry.

the drive there took almost two hours. i had really taken my time getting ready that night, makeup done, hair straightened, nice outfit, and honestly i felt really good about how i looked. when we arrived the house looked a little creepy from the outside but once we went in there were already a few guys there and music playing. the only thing i noticed pretty quickly was that i was the only girl there. there was a lot of alcohol around and everyone seemed relaxed. at some point while we were all talking i suddenly felt someone kiss my neck. it caught me off guard but at the same time it hit exactly the right spot and sent a chill through me. i could have pushed him away but i didn’t. it actually felt good. for the first time in a long time i felt really noticed and wanted. the others started joking that they told me all i needed was to relax and that i’d end up enjoying myself. i just laughed and admitted they might have been right. after that the night kind of turned into a blur of music, drinks, laughter and way more attention than i had ever been used to. everything happened fast and the energy never really slowed down.

when morning came i was completely exhausted, like i had run a marathon for hours. they drove me back and when i got home i went straight to bed. my parents were confused how i could possibly be that tired from “just hanging out with friends.” i never went back to those group meetings again because honestly i was a little embarrassed to run into those guys there after that night. but the strange part is that something really did change. i stopped overthinking so much. i stopped caring so much about what people might think about me. and even now i’ve never told anyone this story in real life… and i probably never will.
