Was your narc parent ever “the baby”?
In family dynamics, did your Narc parents assume the role of “the baby”?
- constantly demanding emotional regulation and self soothing
- plans always had to revolve around them or “tantrum time”
- infantilized themselves. To the point where their emotional outbursts were deemed “quirks”, like something a baby would grow out of, except they were done growing
My NMom was. I (the eldest daughter) found myself playing the role of mother with her and my siblings. More disturbingly, I played the role of partner with my dad (especially when it came to managing her tantrums, my dad hasn’t forgiven me for moving away and leaving him with her).
She used to climb into bed with me at 3 AM. She would wake me up and demand I stroke her hair and tell her stories until she fell asleep, claiming to be so distressed from fighting with my scapegoat sibling. She tried to do this on the night before a big exam for me and I had to scream at her to get out and go ask her damn husband if she wanted comfort. Meanwhile, when I was 9 years old and had terrible sleep anxiety, that door was LOCKED. My husband was horrified my parents would lock their bedroom door at night when I was a kid. His parents never cut off that access for him
Anyone else?
