How is San Diego given the Mexico situation recently?

hey all, we've been planning a trip to SD since last year, but given how things have happened recently some of our parents (we are college students) feel that it might be unsafe? i thought i'd ask locals because we live too far away to take an afternoon visit to scope things out, thanks!
