Coming up with names for places

Discussion

TL;DR: If you’re a fiction writer, what is your process for naming places, whether it be a country, town, school, etc.?

My process is sort of weird, but I saw it on Reddit once (ironic, I’m aware) and have used it ever since for countries. Use a phrase or short sentence to describe the country, e.g. Corrupt, evil government and monarchy. CEGAM.

Then, rearrange it slightly so it feels better to say. Let’s go with…Cergamia. I don’t know why it works so well for me, but I love this method. When I’m making a city or town, I tend to use common suffixes for cities in that area, and base it off of that. For example, a place in England (in one of my ongoing books) is called Martyshire. I took the “shire” from Yorkshire, and the “Marty” is named after a king who conquers the city.
