My mom partially fell for a scam. They paid her on PayPal with this note:

Jay Gerhard:

"You received this email because your PayPal account processed a payout by small deposit confirmation. If you authorized it, no action is needed. If not, please contact PayPal customer care at \[phone number\] immediately to secure your account and request a refund."

She got confused because the email "looked like it came from PayPal". When she called:

\- He "verified" her phone number and email. She gave those two pieces of info

\- he had her go to assist24x7.xyz and enter a code which downloaded this "Client" software

\- she opened the software & it asked for permission to take control of her computer

\- at this point she realized it was a scam, denied the permission and the guy got frustrated, tried to assure her and then he hung up

Since she has called me, we have deleted the software. It seems like the goal of the scam was to gain control of the computer and probably access personal info on it after that. Since she denied that permission, is she safe or are there any other steps we should take? It makes me nervous that she downloaded this software and opened it. She is on a Mac if that's relevant.

[US] Does anyone know about this PayPal scam? They sent my mom to assist24x7.xyz to download software
