So yesterday morning, my cat made the classic sounds that tell me she’s gonna vomit. I gently picked her up and aimed her, as I usually do. She threw up a hairball, then kind of went weak in her legs (primarily rear legs, I don’t think the front ones ever fully went), yowled as she struggled to get up, succeeded but was walking in a very wobbly way afterward, ran clumsily down the stairs (I tried to stop her but she was fast despite her uncoordination), sat down, then defecated a lot. She took a few steps then for a while looking a bit dazed, then after a couple of minutes she was walking around a bit, seeming stressed and mildly dazed but alert. Fought to not be put in her carrier, and put up a strong fight.

Went to the ER and did a physical exam and blood tests, all came back normal. She was lethargic the rest of the day yesterday but considering the ER vet experience, that’s not unexpected from her. She’s always had a slightly weird gait, so we suspect some form of vagal syncope that aggravated a preexisting neurological abnormality? I’m monitoring it and will discuss it at her annual vet appointment within the next month, assuming it doesn’t start happening frequently.

Something similar happened once before, sometime within the last 6-12months, where she kind of gently went weak in the legs after vomiting, but it was over within seconds with no weird gait afterward so I assumed it was because of how I was holding her.

Posting because I haven’t found any examples of this happening in a cat without preexisting heart issues, and the vet seemed pretty confident it wasn’t heart-related since she didn’t seem to fully pass out and her blood tests were normal.

Curious whether anyone knows of something like this happening for neurological reasons. I cannot afford to do full workups and lots of testing with specialists, so please don’t tell me to - if I had the means, I’d be getting every test under the sun, but I don't. So I guess I just want to know if this explanation and proceeding with a primary goal of decreasing vomiting and stress makes any sense.
