More police presence, why?

I have been seeing more police cruisers driving around or parked. Does anyone know why there has been an increase in police presence in la and the surrounding areas? In the early morning, and afternoon I've noticed more of the them around

Did they get more funding or are they supposed to crack down on something. Political pressure?
