Genuine question… why do people who keep outdoor pets always act surprised when they go missing??

Picture this: I’m scrolling through my local area apps. Missing dog. Missing cat. Missing dog… missing cat… “my cat went missing” (open post) “—I only kept him outside…”

I do all I can not to genuinely face palm every single time I see this because I want to understand other people and their struggles… but I just… WHAT IS NOT CLICKING. WHY ARE YOU SURPRISED. WHAT DID YOU THINK WAS GOING TO HAPPEN

This obviously doesn’t apply to people who have had their indoor pets escape. That is an accident and not at all the same as keeping your pet outdoors and then feigning shock when they just… leave. Because they can. And nothing is stopping them.
