Public Health Grad School vs Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant?
Need some advice on what to do for my career. I am a second semester senior and I have been debating between two different career options for the longest time that I have to decide on in the next month. I am a Health Promotion major (Public Health) and have thought that I would go into the public health/healthcare management/healthcare consulting space in some way. In January I applied to a couple of different masters programs and got into:
- MPH (health policy and management) at the University of Georgia
- MPH (health policy and management) at Georgia State
- MPH (health management) at Emory
- MBA/MHA dual degree at Georgia State
- MPH (healthcare management) at Boston University
- MBA at BU for the option of doing their dual degree MBA/MPH.
But I have also been interested in pursuing a career as an certified anesthesiology assistant (CAA), which is a healthcare profession where you work under the direction of an anesthesiologist to develop and implement anesthesia care plans. It is a masters level degree and while I have most of the requirements, I would probably have to work for a year after graduating to get everything else I would need to apply to school. It is a really good career that seemingly a lot of people enjoy, and I am very interested in anesthesia.
On one hand I’ve already gotten into these MPH/MBA/MHA programs and I could be starting them this Fall. And, I do love public health and find it to be really important, and I have been told by my professors that I would do well in this career. But, the public health workforce is tricky right now with the job market and I am just not sure how healthcare management/administration and healthcare consulting is changing with AI (also like I’m scared of corporate America). Plus, right out of school, I would likely be making significantly less than a new grad CAA. With CAA, I am a little scared of it because it is a much more stressful job (keeping someone alive during surgery) and school is really hard and competitive and like I don’t even know if I’m smart enough for that (imposture syndrome). But, they do make an amazing salary (over 200K/yr right out of school) for just a masters degree. I have already shadowed two CAA’s and do have a good understanding of what exactly they do and the scope of their practice, and it is definitely something that is interesting to me.
It’s just hard because I am someone who is hard working and I do think I’m smart and I think I could succeed in multiple careers. I just don’t feel like I have one overwhelming passion pushing me toward a single path.
Any advice about what I should pursue?
