Just broke up four days ago. Still hoping that there's a second chance...
I’ve known this girl for about 3.5 years, starting as "chill colleagues" during my 2nd part time job back in 2022. We had a solid, respectful bedrock for years, but things stayed strictly platonic until this past summer. I went through a pretty significant "glow-up" where I grew out my hair and upgraded my style, and when I came back to work that summer, the dynamic shifted instantly. I actually recommended she come to my university for her degree, and once the term started, we became inseparable as I became a familiar face in her new environment. She was the one who really drove the "talking stage," initiating daily good morning/night snaps for months and acting as the primary aggressor with flirting and compliments. We had amazing "anchor moments" before things got official: building Legos of ourselves, winning a plushie at a Christmas stall, and eventually making it official in early January where I was helping her revise for a brutal exam. At the time, she was enthusiastically all-in and told me I gave "nice hugs".
Immediately after we became official, I unfortunately lost my baseline and started putting massive pressure on her. When all my friends went back to their unis, I got quite lonely and as a result, I ended up attaching too much. As her university workload ramped up, I became greedy for her attention and constantly nagged her for effort and reassurance when she had nothing left in the tank. I prioritized my own feelings over hers; for example, when she couldn't visit me because she was feeling sick, I vented how disappointed I was instead of being supportive of her health. I was blinded by my own needs and disregarded how overwhelmed she actually was.
This behavior led directly to a crash on January 31st. She sent a message explaining she was completely unhappy and overwhelmed trying to balance her family, friends, me, and work. She was physically caving under the stress, feeling constantly sick to the point where she couldn't eat food. She explicitly told me that her health and family had to be her top priorities because she just didn't think she could handle the pressure of the relationship anymore.
For the next few weeks, we entered a state of radio silence. In a panic, I initially sent a massive, heartfelt apology and dropped my first "I love you," but looking back, I realize that only added more weight to her shoulders when she needed space. I spent the first half of February in a hyper-vigilant state. I was tracking her location updates and social activity which only fed my anxiety. Around mid-February, I tried a gentle check-in, but I could see she was out at a pub with friends while I was still spiraling. Eventually, I realized I needed to stop the monitoring for my own peace of mind; I muted her socials and started pouring that energy back into myself, picking up the guitar again after years and going on solo hikes to find my own center.
The actual breakup text came in early March after we agreed to talk. She explained that after taking time to think, she realized she couldn’t show up for me the way I wanted her to and that her feelings had changed because of the sustained pressure. The core issue was her independence; she felt "co-depended on" and felt like she no longer had the freedom to have her own life or simply forget to respond to a text without it being a major conflict. She decided it was best for both of us to end it so she wouldn't feel burdened and I wouldn't feel let down. However, she said that she still cares about me and respects me. She said she'd still want us to be friends, but she told me to prioritise what I feel. If I felt like I needed to completelt detach from her then she wasn't stopping me. But she wanted to let me know that the option of reconnecting as friends after some time is there, should I decide to want it.
In my reply, I prioritized sovereignty over desperation. I told her I respected her honesty and understood her decision completely, emphasizing that I never wanted her to feel pressured. I confirmed that I’d be taking that time apart to focus on myself and kept the bridge intact by telling her she could contact me anytime.
Right now, I’m in total Ghost Mode. I’m reclaiming the version of me that was happy and contented. The one that wasn't even looking for a relationship at that time, before she initiated. I'm hoping that once uni finishes in June, I'll wait until July to reach out. Hopefully by that time, the relief of uni finishing has settled, and the version of me that she broke up would be forgotten.
I'm currently still in the mindset of "I need her to be happy right now." By detaching to her at least temporarily and actively living my life and getting back to my happy and contented self, I'm hoping that come July, I will be whole again and I'm in that mindset of "I'm happy and contented, but life would be better with her." Like I don't need her to be happy, but I'm choosing her because life is better with her.
What do you think, guys? Is there still a chance?
