As a ln anti-ICE college student, am I in the right?
My community college has a lot of amazing, smart, and very hard-working students. Some of these students happen to be undocumented. We have quite an active undocumented population here. I've come to know and work with these students, and they are chasing their dreams while enduring some of the toughest situations possible, all while keeping their head on a constant swivel for ICE and DHS agents looking to kidnap them.
Recently, ICE has been conducting raids in our town, and today, I saw ICE in our school's parking lot. I cannot BELIEVE they would have the audacity to come to a college campus. This is a place that should be protected and safe. College campuses are sanctuaries of learning and progress. When I saw them, I immediately went back into the school and started running up to every student, professor, and campus employee I saw and told them ICE was on campus.
This is what blows my mind. Almost all the students were super thankful, but most of the professors seemed not to bat an eye. They basically had the attitude of "Oh, geez, that's not good. Thanks." And just kept walking. If I was a professor, I would have sprinted to the student welcome center and raised a red alert!! DEFCON 1!!! The student employees were very helpful, and one of them went with me to notify our campus police. Eventually, campus officers contacted the agents, and they left shortly after that.
I feel like I've lost hope in the faculty here. The students were more worried and active than the people who are meant to guide us. Why didn't a professor notify the campus police? Why didn't they take action, and look notify others. Why were the student employees the only ones who did something?
Does anyone have thoughts on this?
