Questions about baptism of disabled child
I was raised Catholic. I was baptized, had my fist communion and reconciliation… but I never was confirmed. I left the faith in my early adult years and now at almost 30, I’m looking to possibly return. I am married with two beautiful daughters. My youngest is two months. My oldest is 2.5 years old and is profoundly disabled. She has motor issues, is deaf with cochlear implants, legally blind, and uses a gtube for most of her nutrition. I don’t think she would be able to sit through mass which is fine because my husband has said he will stay home with her while I take my youngest with me as he isn’t Catholic. The thing is I would like to have both of my girls baptized which my husband is also fine with but he was raised Protestant and doesn’t really understand that baptism isn’t a “choice” in Catholicism. We know the genetic condition she was born with will likely result in her passing away at an early age which makes me more anxious to have her baptized sooner than later. How likely is it that we could have her baptized even though she doesn’t attend mass and likely won’t be able to much in the future due to her medical issues? I would love to have her go to mass at least on the holidays like Christmas and Easter but I worry about her comfort and also if others will judge her or us. I love her so much, I don’t want her to be around people who don’t want her there or to be told she can’t be involved or around other kids because of her disabilities. This is something we have experienced in a nondenominational church and it broke my heart.
Also I have not gone through confirmation and we were not married in the Catholic Church. Will that cause issues with getting our daughters baptized?
We are new to our area so I will be attending different churches to see if I resonate with one more so I don’t have anyone to contact about this.
Thank you in advance for your insight.
