Submit your comment: Trump administration proposes rule allowing Bondi to stop state bars from disciplining attorneys.
To practice as an attorney in the United States, you need to graduate from law school, take and pass a state bar exam, and be admitted to the state bar and given a license to practice. Retaining this license requires abiding by certain rules, from taking a minimum number of credits in classes every year to ethical rules like no stealing money from your clients. State bars enforce these standards and discipline violators. State bars alone decide who gets a law license, and state bars alone enforce the conditions of those licenses.
The Trump DOJ wants Bondi to have the power the power to stop state bars from holding her attorneys to the ethics conditions required to remain licensed by their state bars. The DOJ has ZERO right to interfere with state bars' enforcements of their ethics and discipline of holders of their law licenses! If the DOJ wants to give a bar exam every year and issue their own licenses, fine, let them start doing it. Until then, they have NO say in who gets authorized to practice law or the conditions required to keep practicing law. They do not license attorneys and should NOT have the right to interfere with those who do.
