Did i just lose my setup?

Playing a Solo Self Find Sorc on switch, my first char since starting up again after a decade. i'm running hella meph and i tele right into a huge group of bad guys and get killed, I can't get my stuff back naked so i gear up from my stash, try again and get killed instantly. ok whatever leave game and come back and my stuff will meet me in town right?

only picked up my second body worth of stuff.

Is this a game mechanic that i just somehow haven't learned in years of playing? is my stuff really gone?

i didn't have much, but i did have a skin of the vampire magi and a couple other small things.

feeling super discouraged.
