Questions about supplements for GSD with possible DM
Dear Vets,
I would really appreciate any advice you can give me!
My 8 year old German Shepherd, Kalani, has a weak right back leg. We got it checked out over the summer and were told it was likely arthritis. The Vet prescribed an anti-inflammatory which seemed to help, but in the past month it’s gotten worse.
Two weeks ago, we took her to the vet who recommend she see a neurologist. I took her on Friday, and she said she thinks it is degenerative myelopathy, but it could be something else. We did an MRI on Monday, which came back with protruding discs near her tail, but they don’t think that’s the issue (please see report below). She was given Prednisone to see if that helped, but I haven’t noticed a big difference. She hasn’t been officially diagnosed yet, so I am holding on to hope, but I just have a horrible feeling. They did a genetic test and we should get the results back in a week.
I know she isn’t in pain, but I was reading online that supplements can help slow its progression. I am making sure she exercises a ton, and we will explore physical therapy and acupuncture. She has insurance, and her dad and I are also prepared to throw whatever resources are needed to enjoy our days with our precious girl.
She is running and playing still. I do have a video if that helps, though I know you can’t diagnose on here.
Please see the attached report and I would be immensely grateful for any advice you may have.
Thank you!
