NY toll by mail/invalidated inspection - harassment by the state

Location: New York State. I have a custom plate on my truck, the plate is my first initial and the year I was born, it’s only 3 digits, it’s a super cool plate and I’m proud of it. I got it in May of 2023 and have had it since. In late November I received a notice I had a toll from other side of state where I have never been. Coincidentally there is a state agency with the same plate number (except it has state seal)… I don’t even know how it’s possible but I’m guessing since mine is civilian, an the state agency’s has state seal - that’s the difference?

The picture was of a totally different make and model truck than mine. And the plate had NY seal on it of the troop that it is in (I think it’s a state police vehicle) (Mine is civilian excelsior, obviously). I sent in my appeal in December. With picture proof. Never heard back. In late January I got another letter. It was a red letter this time. Stating I still owed this toll but now it has a bunch of fees and they were threatening to suspend my registration and send me to collections!

I called the number on toll bill, and they told me the only way to dispute this was to send letter with proof. So I actually wrote a letter, attached copy of my reg, picture of my truck & plate, etc and sent that in mail the next day. Proving that my truck was an F150 and not a Chevy Silverado.

I have heard nothing back but tonight I get an email that my inspection is expired as of 2/28 for my license plate/truck…. I just had my inspection renewed in January an it passed and have the proof of it. I can’t help but feel this is related to this toll issue…

This is borderline harassment now from the state of NY. My custom plate, which was my first initial and then the year I was born is turning into a complete headache…… I don’t know what to do. Every time I call I either get AI or someone completely uninterested in helping. What do I even do…
