How common is it to have close friendships with people who have very different lifestyles or family values?

Growing up in the UK, many of us had friends whose lifestyles or family expectations were quite different from our own. For example some people don’t drink alcohol, avoid certain foods, or have stricter family rules about socialising. I’m curious how people handled that in friendships and everyday situations.

For example, one girl I know comes from a very strict family but sometimes drinks alcohol or eats foods she normally wouldn’t just to fit in with the typical crowd at college or work, and she says people from her own community can be quite judgemental about it. I also know a guy whose parents sent him back to their family’s home country to study at university because they thought he was becoming “too westernised,” and they even told him he wasn’t really British.

Just wondering how common situations like this are and whether friendships usually stay strong despite those differences.
