Returning Player with a few questions

So I played from release and it was challenging. I'm not a math person. So I did what most do. Go to maxroll or icy veins and look up builds. See what looks fun and try it out. D4 was way more complex than D3. My family and I played D3 together and when 4 came out we tried it. I liked the game but the rest of the family didn't. So we stuck to D3.

My question is did they dumb this game down a lot? I came back when Paladin was added and loved crusader in D3 and so far the Paladin is just cruising. I am only playing on hard from the original campaign as I never got to finish it before Hatred came out.
